Job Description
|
|
Performs responsible technical and supervisory field work involving the collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes. Assists Crime Scene Investigators assigned to a designated shift. Coordinates and participates in all aspects of crime scene processing on a designated shift, including but not limited to sketching, photographing crime scenes, obtaining prints, and assisting with reconstruction of crimes. Responsible for the documentation of supervisory notes on subordinate employees assigned to a designated shift. Initiates any disciplinary action required and completes required evaluations of subordinate employees. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Forensics Manager. Performance is evaluated while in progress and upon completion through direct on-site supervision, review of reports submitted, conferences, and results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in Crime Scene Technology, Crime Scene Investigations, Forensic Science, or related field and six (6) years of experience in crime scene processing and photography; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Training in supervision and management required. Must have successfully completed 144 hours of International Association for Identification (IAI) Board-approved structured programs and/or training. Must pass proficiency exam, medical and psychological examinations, and a thorough background check which includes polygraph. Must obtain certification through the IAI as a Level 1 – Certified Crime Scene Investigator within sixteen (16) months of hire.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Processes crime scene and may perform all other functions inherent in the Crime Scene Investigator position (sketching, collecting evidence, fingerprinting, photographing, etc.), utilizing various chemicals and complex specialized equipment.
Supervises and assists in completing the activities of Crime Scene Investigators assigned to work designated shift; establishes work schedules, prioritizes work and assigns personnel as needed to crime scenes, fire scenes, general photography, surveillance photography, special assignments, etc. to ensure maximum utilization of staff time and equipment.
Instructs and trains employees in proper methods of crime scene processing, , photography and other technical tasks; maintains established performance standards and internal operating procedures for designated shift
Reviews crime scene reports and work orders completed by designated crime scene shift personnel for completeness and technical accuracy; to ensure work performed in accordance with established guidelines.
Prepares monthly and annual reports of designated shift activities for submission to Forensics Manager.
Testifies in court as expert witness in crime scene work.
Researches technical journals/publications and attends scientific meetings, seminars, and trade shows to keep abreast of current developments in the field of forensic science and crime scene work.
Reviews designated shift operations and recommends internal operating procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of crime scene processing and packaging procedures.
Thorough knowledge of photographic processing procedures, mechanics of camera lenses and lights, laboratory storage, and photographic equipment and chemicals.
Knowledge of various blood detection techniques and chemicals.
Knowledge of effective supervisory practices.
Ability to work around dangerous chemicals.
Ability to work in unpleasant and/or hazardous conditions at crime scenes, such as dead, mutilated bodies and insect- or rodent-infested dwellings.
Ability to process crime scenes, collect, preserve, and package evidence, and maintain a proper chain of custody.
Ability to photograph decomposed or mutilated bodies and related scenes involving major crimes, and remain calm.
Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to write technical reports and review reports completed and submitted by designated shift.
