Job Description
|
|
Performs professional, administrative work for the Orlando Fire Department. An employee assigned to this classification manages the Fire Department's public Information and safety education programs. The responsibilities of this position include responding to news media inquiries; composing newspaper articles, radio, and televisions script; initiating press releases for fire related activities and incidences; and develops, directs, and implements fire and life safety programs. In addition, this position fully manages grants that relate to the assigned program and oversees all other departmental grants from a quality control aspect. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Chief and performance is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results achieved.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Communications, or related field and a minimum of four (4) years of professional experience developing and administering programs, some of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills required. State of Florida Municipal Fire Inspector Certification required within one (1) year of hire. Valid Florida Driver's License required.

Develops, plans, and composes news items, newspaper articles, stories, bulletins, speeches, reports, letters, and radio and television scripts, communicating on behalf of the Orlando Fire Department in public information matters.
Develops and maintains positive community and media relations through frequent contact with the community, business, and media personnel.
Designs, develops, and updates Department website content including press releases, current events, training, operations, and safety/prevention information.
Develops, directs, and implements fire and life safety programs for the citizens, business owners, employees, and citizens of Orlando.
Actively seeks grants for the Fire Department; coordinates the flow of information to the proper personnel; reviews grants prior to submission; monitors and approves all grant expenditures prior to purchase; monitors grants; and ensures timely and accurate reporting of information to the issuing agency.
May supervise and/or coordinate the work of light duty Fire Department employees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Orlando Fire Department operations and the various fire safety laws, codes, and regulations.
Knowledge of trends in fire safety education programs.
Knowledge of fire safety, fire extinguisher use and maintenance, and smoke detector placement, installation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of grant administration.
Skilled in public speaking, making presentations, conducting workshops, and presenting ideas clearly and concisely in writing and/or verbally.
Skilled in research techniques, report generation, and project management.
Skilled in grant research, writing, and proposal development.
Skilled in the operation of a van pulling a trailer.
Ability to write and produce clear and concise reports, publications, memoranda, and letters.
Ability to handle numerous assignments simultaneously and deal with frequent interruptions.
Ability to independently plan, initiate, and complete assignments.
Ability to organize and supervise activities of staff and volunteers.
Ability to research and find solutions to problems.
Ability to analyze and interpret factual data necessary to render opinions, decisions, and direction for grants and applicants.
Ability to use mathematical formulas; to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide; and apply basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to design pamphlets and create props and visual aids used in presentations.
Ability to conduct home safety inspections which involves walking, bending, and stooping.
Ability to operate a personal computer and software programs, camera, public address system, and other equipment needed to make presentations.
Ability to lift and operate a fire extinguisher for demonstrations, including live burns.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, elected City Officials, neighborhood leadership and residents, area businesses, and community and social service agencies.
Ability to work evenings and weekendsAbility to work in inclement weather.
