Job Description

Performs responsible skilled and first-line supervisory field work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of electromechanical and solid state-operated traffic signal equipment. Work and supervision duties require considerable knowledge in the areas of precision electronic, mechanical, and electrical diagnosis, testing, installation, repair, and maintenance of electrically and electronically actuated traffic control equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Traffic Operations Manager. Performance is reviewed through conferences, inspections of work and performance of systems. Must be able to lift up to fifty pounds (50 lbs).

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and five (5) or more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class C CDL required. Certification by the International Municipal Signal Association as a Traffic Signal Technician Level II required. Level II Field and Branch or Level III preferred.

Responsibilities

Supervises and participates in the work of Construction Technicians, Electronics Technicians, Locators, Signal Inspectors, and Traffic Signal Communication personnel that perform a variety of skilled and specialized tasks.

Reviews work orders, construction plans and/or schematic drawings of projects impacting City maintained traffic/pedestrian signals, lays out and explains work assignments to staff.

Assigns tasks, participates in work, and inspects work upon completion to ensure standards are maintained.

Provides on-the-job training for employees regarding proper work methods, equipment operations, and safety practices; enforces safety rules and regulations.

Requisitions materials and supplies in accordance with established guidelines.

May transport employees to and from job sites.

May drive and operate bucket truck to install, repair and maintain traffic signals.

Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with electrical, electromechanical, and electronic traffic signal equipment; determines appropriate corrective measures, and prepares estimates of costs involved.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices involved in the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical traffic signal equipment.

Knowledge of the principals of electronics.

Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematic drawings and technical specifications.

Ability to use standard and specialized testing devices to identify defects in electronic and electromechanical devices.

Ability to prepare cost estimates.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors and general public.

Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to prepare written reports and maintain accurate records.

Ability to move about safely on construction work sites, being exposed to heights, confined areas, fumes and AC voltage wires, etc.

Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds, climb, bend, and stoop.
