Job Description
 
Performs professional-level work; coordinates, plans, and publicizes the various programs/services of the Fire Department, both locally and regionally; promotes and creates positive news coverage and image of the Department; and serves as a spokesperson for the Fire Chief and the Department when the Public Information Manager is not present. Also, writes and broadcasts all types of communications including agendas, press releases, newsletters, web content, advisories, social media, and reports. Is responsible for developing and creating marketing materials, educational content, and providing timely strategies for communicating to all City of Orlando residents and to the Orlando Fire Department. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Public Information Manager and performance is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results achieved. Must have the ability to work nights and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate in Public Relations, Journalism, English, Communications, or related field and two (2) years experience in public relations or news writing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Master’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations a plus. Agency experience also a plus. Must have a valid Florida Driver's License.
 
Responsibilities

Coordinates, plans, and publicizes Orlando Fire Department’s various programs, both locally and regionally.

Projects a positive news coverage image for Orlando Fire Department services.

Writes all types of communications including press releases, speeches, agendas, newsletters, advisories, public service announcements, social media, web content, and reports; schedules communications when applicable.

Develops and creates marketing materials for Orlando Fire Department programs.

Researches, develops, and maintains updated media database; plans strategies for City of Orlando audiences in a timely manner.

Establishes curriculum and business plans for educational programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of Orlando Fire Department operations and the various fire safety laws, codes, and regulations.

Knowledge of media relations as well as oral and written communication.

Knowledge of OFD structure and Public Records laws.

Knowledge of integrated communications.

Skilled in public speaking and presenting ideas clearly and concisely, both in writing and/or verbally.

Skilled in time management, ensuring all duties and assignments are completed and submitted in a timely manner.

Skilled in the use of various computer software and various media equipment.

Ability to independently plan, initiate, and complete assignments.

Ability to research and find solutions to problems.
