Job Description
 
Performs technical work maintaining fire equipment. Assists in fire hose testing, pump testing, handling inventory, maintaining tools and equipment, and overall logistical operation. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years of small equipment repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class B CDL required. Must be able to operate a computer and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel. Previous firefighter experience or firefighter certification preferred.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Maintains tools and equipment from fire apparatus, ie., removes and replaces broken ax handles, pike poles, replaces light bulbs and batteries in hand held lights and repairs many tools that need screws, bolts, sharpening chain saws, etc. Maintains self-contained breathing apparatus.

Maintains inventory of tools and equipment, ie., actively rotates inventory equipment. Reports equipment that needs to be procured, reports and compiles items for annual budget requests to Logistics manager. Removes gasoline from small tools such as chain saws, power plants. Tests stored power tools for readiness.

Assists Logistics supervisor in projects assigned such as retrieving data, information on fire equipment, demonstrations such as water flow from nozzles.

Pick up tools, equipment for inventory and returns to proper location.

Maintains fire hose that has been damaged in fires or fails tests. Replaces couplings, gaskets, returns fire hose to proper storage quarters.

Meets vendors, service contractors, etc. to allow them into secured fire stations to complete their efforts to deliver, make repairs, etc.

Maintains lists and data on fire equipment that the Logistics manager needs to fulfill a proper budget request exercise, and for procurement.

Travels to fire stations for special needs, to assist with projects, to measure, to view and observe.

Assist fire crews in setting up hose testing machines, transporting hose testing equipment to stations, etc.

Assists fire pump test operator in hose layouts, hose couplings to apparatus and monitoring gauges.

Marks equipment for fire trucks to identify Orlando Fire Department equipment.

Keeps records on special assignments, ie., distribution of equipment such as nozzles. Logs work orders.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of small tools and their applications in repairing broken axe handles.

Knowledge of changing batteries in hand-held lights.

Knowledge of non-technical repairs to valves.

Knowledge of replacing handles on fire nozzles.

Knowledge of removing and replacing fire hose couplings.

Knowledge of hydraulics such as compressed air breathing apparatus.

Skilled with the dexterity to utilize screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.

Excellent driving skills.

Skills to focus on job at hand.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

Ability to work with others.

Ability to operate a computer, various office equipment, and software/programs such as: scanners, copiers, Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, etc.

Ability to receive directions and execute.

Ability to lift heavy items such as fire hose, nozzles, forcible entry tools, etc.

Ability to learn new technical skills involving hydraulics, compressed air equipment repairs.

Ability to drive various fire apparatuses, ie fire engine and or ladder/tower truck.
