Job Description
 

This is a professional-level position responsible for planning, managing and evaluating City of Orlando events including budgeting, managing sponsorships/partnerships and vendor agreements/contracts. Primary duties include overseeing the production and promotion of citywide and Mayor’s signature and special events and city initiatives, programs and services. This position collaborates closely with the Mayor's Office, elected officials, and senior staff to recommend event strategies and budgets, provide briefings, and support the Mayor and senior staff on event days. The role also supervises the Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations Communications and Event Coordinator and oversees day-of-event staff, vendors, interns, and volunteers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Communications Manager and is reviewed through discussions, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Advertising, Journalism (public relations emphasis), or related field plus five (5) years of marketing and event management experience preferably in the general public realm to include one (1) year of supervisory experience. Experience in all aspects of event logistics; including sponsorships and budgeting is required. Valid Florida Driver's License required at time of employment.

 
Responsibilities

Research, plan, produce, manage, and evaluate special events, including Mayor's signature events and city department events, to launch, promote and/or support city initiatives, programs, and services.
Work with community partners and funders to organize and implement community-based events.
Oversee and manage the budget for city-sponsored events and initiatives.
Develop and execute strategies to solicit sponsorships and partnerships to support events.
Works in collaboration with other teams within the Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations to ensure consistency with branding messages and Mayor’s initiatives.
Serves in a consultant role for various community committees and internal committees when the city is hosting an event.
Serves as an advisor to city elected officials and staff to effectively plan, produce and promote events.
Creates a variety of written materials, including talking points, marketing pieces, event websites, and print and digital media collateral.
Supports the ESF-14 public information team during citywide emergency activations for major events.
Supervises the Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations Communications and Event Coordinator.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of public relations, event planning, coordination and evaluation, and communication practices.
Knowledge of deadlines and operations needed to communicate effectively with the public.
Knowledge of the principles, theories, philosophy and techniques of marketing, promoting and advertising programs, and events.
Knowledge of City of Orlando community resources and partners.
Knowledge in project management.
Skills proficient in Microsoft applications.
Ability to create, manage and evaluate event and marketing budgets.
Ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, peers and community partners and committees.
Ability to maintain and develop positive working relationships with internal and external audiences with coordinating various event related projects.
Ability to supervise staff.
