Job Description

|
Performs administrative and supervisory recreation work in planning, coordinating, and conducting a specialized recreation program in Cultural Arts for across the City of Orlando. Is responsible for the operation and direction of the overall special program unit. Participates in planning, organizing, and directing a specialized recreation program designed to meet the needs and interests of City employees/residents. May be assigned to manage one or more specialized programs. Work assignments require the exercise of initiative and independent judgment in organizing and supervising specialized recreation activities. May be required to train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate assigned personnel. Direction is received from an administrative supervisor. Work is reviewed through observation of results achieved, reports, conferences, performance evaluations, and counseling sessions. Work is sometimes performed outdoors where employee may be exposed to extreme heat, insects, and weather conditions. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate in Recreation Administration, Liberal Arts, Education or related field and at least two (2) years experience with cultural arts programming, to include arts and crafts, drama, music, dance, puppetry, script writing, creative writing, et cetera; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Class B CDL desired. FRPA Certification desired. Some supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Plans, coordinates, supervises, and conducts specialized recreational activities for cultural arts, senior citizens, community programs, City events, or therapeutic/athletics/youth sports.
Plans, initiates, organizes, and supervises specific programs and services in accordance with the interests and needs of the public.
Visits with educational, civic, fraternal, and social organizations to solicit the participation and support of neighborhood and community groups.
Maintains accurate records pertaining to revenue, personnel, inventory, program evaluations, and attendance; is responsible for inventory ordering and management.
Submits work orders to assure proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
Under direction, assists in the preparation of a program budget.
Participates in recreation planning, research, and evaluation.
Checks, schedules, maintains, and oversees use of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
Coordinates and facilitates a yearly fundraiser at a local arts festival.
Participates on multiple committees for the Division as chair or member; holds regular advisory committee meetings.
Coordinates volunteers at events and in-house.
Plans and coordinates events across the Division in cultural arts including parades, large group events, and use of the theater.
Uses photoshop or other image editing software and email marketing software for the purposes of advertising.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Extensive knowledge of the principles, rules, materials, equipment requirements, and organization of a wide variety of recreational programming activities within the specialty area.
Considerable knowledge of public recreation principles and practices, policies and procedures, trends, and methods.
Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation programming.
Knowledge of first aid methods and safety precautions used in recreation.
Working knowledge of public relations principles and practices.
Working knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and office management.
Ability to bend, stoop, and reach over head may be required for some positions.
Ability to plan, direct, and appraise the work of subordinates.
Ability to schedule, instruct, and supervise numerous activities.
Ability to prepare, justify, and maintain a program budget.
Ability to conduct in-service training sessions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other employees, outside organizations, participants, and the public.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to both individuals and groups.
Ability to maintain records and submit oral and written reports.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Ability to operate personal computer with word processing and budgeting software.
