Job Description
 
Performs professional work planning and coordinating programs related to landscape and plant care education. Work involves developing and implementing adult and children's educational programs in horticulture and other plant-related subjects. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director and is evaluated through meetings, review of design and program plans, and results achieved.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field with two to three (2-3) years experience developing educational programs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Presents programs concerning horticulture, floriculture, agriculture, and entomology to various clubs and organizations and the general public and green industry businesses; writes articles for H.P. Leu Gardens newsletter, City Hallways, the visitors' guide, and other garden brochures, etc.

Keeps abreast of new developments in field and serves on various horticultural committees such as the Leu and Garden Show Committee, Garden Writer's Association of America, and National Convention Committee.

Supervises, trains personnel in proper work methods, performance standards and security requirements; interviews, appraises and disciplines employees to recommend employment, salary increases, and disciplinary action.

Develops and conducts the education programming specifically for children during school breaks and summer months; creates course outlines and class formats, designs and promotes "Garden Detectives" Summer Day Camp, "Garden Explorer" and coordinates with other agencies.

Develops Gardens Tour programs for special audiences (the physically challenged, exceptional students, senior citizens, various schools and local businesses etc.); coordinates the weekly Horticultural Therapy programming with area nursing homes and hospitals.

Analyzes, effectiveness of horticultural practices, classes, displays and special events.

Assists Manager and Executive Director in the preparation of the annual education budget, garden budget, and program/performance goals and objectives.

Develops maintenance budget, maintains activity records and prepares periodic activity and budget reports.

Prepares and distributes public service announcements for the promotion of Garden educational activities.

Maintains liaisons with purchasing department, maintenance agencies and various plant societies.

Coordinates purchase of plants and materials necessary for educational programs and special events; prepares specifications and requisitions for materials and supplies and submits to supervisor for approval.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of modern practices and principles of horticulture, botany, agronomy and related fields.

Knowledge of specific and general research and report writing.

Knowledge of insects, parasites, diseases and other infestations which affect trees, shrubs, plants, flowers and grass and the composition and application of insecticides, fungicides and disinfectants for their control.

Ability to plan, assign, supervise and inspect the work of subordinates.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with employees, special groups, and the public.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and writing.

Ability to establish and enforce security standards and general operating procedures.

Ability to prepare and conduct educational and cultural programs for children, garden clubs, civic groups, and to conduct employee in-service training.

Ability to develop and maintain an operating budget.
