Job Description
|
|
Performs Arborist work in the care and maintenance of the City of Orlando’s public trees and equipment used to care for the trees. Responsibilities include the review of landscaping and related plans in conjunction with construction permits, and planned developments for compliance with the Tree Protection Ordinance and Technical Review Committee required conditions of approval. Review tree mitigation plans and calculate mitigation in conjunction with construction permits, mass grading, subdivision, and planned development submittals. Conduct field inspections of all landscape installation permits. Responsible for inspecting trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds to determine the need for trimming, spaying, or other appropriate treatment. Keeps records of time and material, requisition supplies, and preparing contract documents and reports. Work is performed independently with the direction of the Forestry Manager, and performance is reviewed while in progress, reports, meetings, and results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, environment conservation, or related field and three (3) years of demonstrated experience in tree care, maintenance, and diagnosis of tree health issues, or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. International Society of Arboriculture certification (ISA) is required. Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) is preferred. A valid Florida Driver’s License is required.
Must be available to receive calls for emergency services and respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Through knowledge of the principles and practices of tree maintenance and arboriculture.
Knowledge of proper tree selection and planting procedures; hazard tree recognition and assessment.
Knowledge of pesticides and their application, diseases, and pests.
Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in arboriculture.
Knowledge of basic math.
Skilled in the use of a computer and software.
Skilled in the use of tools needed to perform the job.
Ability to identify tree species, flowers, common insects, and diseases.
Ability to read plans.
Ability to operate and maintain various tools and equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lifts, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
Ability to operate a computer and software, maintenance management systems, GIS, GPS, and other technology.
Ability to document and keep accurate records of tree assessments, maintenance activities, and recommendations for future care.
Ability to perform basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing using decimals and fractions.
Ability to use and understand units of measure.
Ability to estimate area, circumference, diameter, and volume and use related formulas.
Ability to work independently, and with a team.
Ability to communicate effectively with another employee, supervisor, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
Ability to safely operate a vehicle and adhere to safety laws.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work at excessive heights, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching,
pushing, pulling, walking, lifting, lifting to 50lbs, and work often in adverse weather conditions.

Develop annual work plans, performance measures, and levels of service related to tree care.
Review Tree Mitigation plans and calculate mitigation in conjunction with construction permits, mass grading, subdivision, and planned
development submittals.
Assigns, instructs, supervises, reviews, and approves the work of contracted tree trimmers and City staff engaged in tree and other landscape
maintenance and pest control activities.
Review service requests and resolve complaints and concerns related to trees. Must be available to receive calls for emergency service and
respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Serves as a technical and resource support for City staff regarding tree issues, tree-related view issues, tree trimming, and tree removal requests.
Collaborates on the development and implementation of invasive tree pest management plans.
Reviews plans, specifications, and work sites for landscape rehabilitation projects.
Develops and maintains planting-related performance measures tree maintenance records and database.
Use computerized maintenance management systems, GIS, GPS, and other technologies.
Collaborate and coordinate with contractors, City staff, and other agencies.
Assist in the annual budget development and budget management.
Conduct field visits and inspections.
Receive calls for emergency service and be available to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
