Job Description
|
|
Performs technical, professional, and analytical work pertaining to the evaluation, installation, use, and maintenance of stand-alone and network-attached personal computer systems. An employee in this class is responsible for analyzing hardware and software needs, installing hardware and software, training personnel in the use of computer applications and equipment, analyzing manual and automated systems, and determining the feasibility of computer applications. The employee performs the physical installation of equipment, which involves lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, and crawling. Work is performed under general supervision. Performance is reviewed through observation, discussion, and review of the effectiveness of programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree with major coursework in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or related field. two to three (2-3) years of computer experience operating, installing, analyzing, and maintaining various computer systems, including hardware and software, as applicable; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Must pass police background investigation. Demonstrated ability to resolve desktop computing problems, including hardware upgrades, operating system upgrades, and peripheral device attachment required.
Additional Qualifications for Promotion:
Promotions are not to be considered an automatic function of longevity and are subject to the review and authorization of the Supervisor. The employee’s last performance review must have resulted in an overall rating of Meets standards or better with no factor rating of less than meets. Job Family Competencies for CSSA II - Ability to install hardware/software with knowledge of MS applications and operating systems. Ability to identify, troubleshoot and resolve computer problems. Ability to upgrade hardware and software with minimal review and assistance. Ability to communicate technical issues to clients and management.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Evaluates, designs, installs, and supports local area networks and stand alone computers; installs peripheral equipment and software; determines functional specifications of new systems and enhancements.
Responds to and diagnoses hardware and software trouble calls; conducts tests and debugs programs; checks existing programs within systems for errors; recommends configurations; makes necessary changes.
Meets with clients to determine their needs and present systems; provides technical advice and service regarding the evaluation, selection, and installation of hardware and software; develops system proposals, documentation, and client procedures and modifies any which currently exist.
Evaluates application of software products; may write custom applications to meet short term needs.
Maintains inventory of all City computer equipment and software.
Trains and assists City personnel in the use of computer applications and equipment; may conduct some classed as needed.
Keeps abreast of the changes in the computer and peripheral industry, researches hardware and software, meets with vendors for demonstrations or problem resolution.
May assist LAN Administrator with local area networks.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of information systems, concepts, techniques and operating principles.
Knowledge of various computer software programs and desk top publishing.
Knowledge of the capabilities, cost effectiveness, limitations and uses of computers and related equipment.
Knowledge of desktop operating systems.
Knowledge of peripheral devices including scanners, printers, and PDA's.
Skill in the operation and utilization of personal computers and computer terminals.
Ability to detect malfunctions and furnish technical advice on systems.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to work with employees of all levels of computer knowledge.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental contacts and vendors.
Ability to read and understand program language and installation manuals.
Ability to operate personal computer for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift computer equipment weighing 35lbs, bend, kneel, reach, and crawl in order to conduct installations.
Ability to conduct tests, analyze test results, detect errors and take proper corrective steps.
Ability to prioritize and schedule user requests in a timely manner.
Ability to coordinate support with users, System/Network Administrators, Engineers and management to complete project as required.
Ability to document, maintain and modify procedures for installation of software on computer systems and remain flexible to meet a constantly changing work environment.
Perform other related duties as required.
