Job Description
 
Is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the efficient operation of the Internal Affairs Section, which consists of sworn and civilian staff members. The Internal Affairs Section investigates allegations of employee misconduct. This position acts as an advisor to the Police Chief in disciplinary matters and reports directly to the OPD Chief of Staff and OFD Fire Chief.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field and four (4) years experience in law enforcement with some experience conducting internal investigations relating to employee misconduct. Must possess both a Police Standards Certificate and a valid Florida Driver's License upon application. Must pass police background investigation which includes polygraph.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Reads all the investigative reports prepared by investigators within the Section; reviews them for accuracy and completeness; and approves them for submission to the officer/employee’s chain of command.

Reads investigative reports after they have been routed through the chain of command; approves reports on behalf of the Chief, if the findings and /or disciplinary recommendations are consistent with past disciplinary practices.

As the Chief’s designee: reads defensive tactics and vehicle pursuit reports; reviews profiling complaint forms; and ensures consistency of the chain-of-command review process in determining whether actions were in accordance with Department policy.

Reads and studies all material relating to grieved cases in order to be able to advise the Chief on them.

Supervises and evaluates assigned investigative sergeant, police services specialist, and administrative assistants; reviews evaluations of five sworn members (investigators).

Attends weekly Section staff meetings along with any regular or special management meetings that are called.
